When to aerate a tall fescue lawn

For tall fescue, early fall is generally the best time to core-aerate, ideally paired with overseeding. Spring works as a second choice. Avoid aerating in summer heat or drought.

Signs you need it

Water puddles or runs off, the soil is hard to push a screwdriver into, or the lawn sees heavy foot traffic. Clay soils usually benefit more often than sandy soils.

Soil moisture matters

Aerate when soil is moist but not soggy โ€” often a day or two after rain or a good watering. Dry, hard soil limits core depth; saturated soil smears.

Pair with overseeding

The holes give new seed good soil contact. Overseed right after aerating, then keep the seed moist until it is established.
